First I want to assume that you are reading this because you are starting to worry just a little bit about your memory and the possibility of Alzheimers later in life. You're not the only one-there are 72 million baby boomers taking turns on line every day looking for information, help and hope for the Alzheimers prevention . You may have noticed long time friends or people at work maybe your own spouse decline right before your eyes. It's more than a little scary knowing you could be there too; so we look for answers.

Brain fog is not necessarily an indication of Alzheimers, Age Associated Memory Impairment (AAMI) or any form of dementia. But it is a good indication that your brain health needs attention. It could be that any number of things or a combination of things could make all the difference; but it is up to you to take action. A recent study of baby boomers concluded that 62% share Alzheimers as their biggest fear of growing old. Not heart disease, not heart attack, not stroke, not cancer but Alzheimers. I found myself in that group. I also discovered that among physicians, men and women who see more pain, suffering and disease than any other segment of the population, they would prefer anything to Alzheimers.

Alzheimers is characterized by elevated levels of beta-amyloid peptides that cause plaque to build up in the brain. The plaque causes the neurons to shrivel and tangle (fibrillary tangle) which prevents the synapses from firing neurotransmitters to relay information through out the brain.

The increase in this disease among people under 65 is increasing at an alarming rate. Alzheimers prevention is the only course of action we can take at this point as there is no known cure for the disease.

So do you bury your head in the sand and hope you get to dodge this bullet or do you take the necessary steps to be healthy and mentally alert your entire life? The good news is that what you do to enhance and improve the most important organ in your body will enhance and improve your entire body. BUT if you think that this disease is just inevitable to some people keep your affairs in order it may become a self fulfilling prophecy.

If on the other hand you want to reduce your risk and increase energy, focus, concentration, memory and overall brain fitness here are several steps to take to make that happen.

First change your diet: there are some foods that do so much to create and maintain brain health they have to be included in a brain healthy diet. Eat whole grain foods that contain the bran, germ and endosperm. Eat apples, yes; an apple a day does keep the doctor away. Include more berries in your diet, all sorts, but the darker the better.

It also turns out that fish really is brain food you should eat fish 3 to 5 times per week; salmon, tuna, herring etc. And remember the tough vegetables- cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. Yes I know- you hate that kind of stuff- but you are an adult now and Alzheimers prevention is your objective.

On the other hand if you have been avoiding nuts because of the fat content you can quite worrying nuts are good for you, the right fat, good slow metabolism, they help you feel full. Along with nuts include all kinds of dairy products but make them low fat when possible.

Eat more greens, the darker the better, spinach, turnip, kale etc. Yes I know.... But remember who you are and what your objective is. Add soy to your diet, it's especially good for Alzheimers prevention.

Sweet potatoes, one of natures most perfect and complete foods over all, is particularly good for brain health. So don't save then for the Holidays; eat them often.

Beans and legumes, there are many varieties and they are all very good for you and good for your brain. Tomatoes are another incredibly healthy fruit for over all health, especially the brain.

Since most people are restless, excitable or forgetful on occasion, the above symptoms should apply all or most of the time for a period of six months or more to indicate ADD. The symptoms might appear gradually, rather than all at once and if the disorder is not treated, it can lead to self esteem and other behavioral issues in adulthood.

What are the Symptoms of ADHD?

When comparing the difference between ADD and ADHD symptoms, it is important to note that not all the above symptoms will apply to every ADD or ADHD sufferer. If the child cannot concentrate on anything but is sitting still, this might be ADD rather than ADHD but the child will still need treatment with any ADD or ADHD symptoms causing a problem. Despite the difference between ADD and ADHD, many of the treatment options are the same.

Children with ADD are usually prescribed medicines to control the disorder but many of these can cause unwanted side effects. It is not really what you might think! It is not NLP (neuro-linguistic programming). NLP is used by professionals to change your thinking patterns in such a way that you cannot fear what you may have feared before. However this process usually not permanent and to ensure longevity, the person needs to do maintenance work.

I'm also not talking about flooding. Flooding is when you subject yourself to the thing that you fear the most or the stimulus that you associate fear with.

The problem with NLP is that you have to find someone who knows how to do it and the problem with flooding is that it's too painful a process. The problem with CBT or cognitive behavioral therapy is that you really can't talk someone out of having OCD. So what are we talking about then?

I'm talking about a process where you don't need a therapist of any kind, you don't need any special skills. I'm talking about a process which you can learn and use every time you feel fear towards anything. It's a method that once you learn, you will have for life and you can apply it not only to OCD but any other fear or anxiety.

Again, so what is it? It's simply retraining your mind to think like someone that doesn't have OCD. You could name it Ocd-gone-in-seven-days. but naming this process would give weight to OCD and we want to get to a point where we don't think about it at all. So what we are learning is the skill of how to retrain the way that we think so that we can lead happier lives!

It's something that you can do consciously without having to trick your mind. You talk yourself consciously through the things that you fear, but there is a special way to do this. Here are some of the things that you can do right now to get started.

When you feel like you need to perform a ritual, tell yourself this consciously. for example, if you feel like you have to keep touching a door knob because you fear that if you don't your mother's going to get sick, tell yourself, "I feel like my mother will get sick if I don't touch this door knob a certain amount of times."What is happening is that you are bringing out your thoughts from the subconscious to your conscious mind, where you can process it logically.

Now you may laugh at that statement and be like man, something must be wrong with me if I fear that and think like that! it's just not true, you have just realized that you made a faulty association, Now what do we do when we realize that it doesn't make any sense but we feel like we have to perform the ritual anyway?

You can't will yourself not to care, you can say to yourself, I know that this is bothering me, but I also know that if I don't touch the doorknob nothing will happen to my mother, anything in my mind that tells me it would is not logical and therefore is wrong, so I choose not to do this ritual.

This is when you will feel anxiety. You can say to yourself, "I will let this anxiety happen, knowing it's just sensations. I know that I will get worse if I do the ritual and I will get better if I don't do the rital, it's that simple.".

If I don't perform rituals, I am OCD free! Here's why it's important to start like this, because with the other types of treatments, you need other people's skills, or you need to trick your mind, or you need to go through painful exercises not knowing why, it's hard for people with OCD to trust people and especially harder to trust someone to cure you when you don't fully understand how the process works yourself.

By starting this way, you will command control of your own mind and learn this skill that can be applied to anything and you will learn how to be independent and it will save you a fortune. Of course this is not everything you have to do, but it's a good start that you can do right now that will bring results that will last a lifetime!

Many parents of children with ADHD disorder are not members of any ADHD support groups. This is a shame because such support groups are actually an invaluable resource in the overall treatment of ADHD in children. It is a well known fact that to achieve holistic ADHD treatment, a multi-disciplinary approach is deemed ideal. This means that while stimulant medications take care of bodily functions, such as the functioning of the brain, efforts need to be made to teach ADHDers learning skills, social interactions, and proper behavioural patterns.

It is definitely not enough to depend solely on the doctors, because there is a limit to what they (doctors) could do. Besides that, walking in and out of the doctor's doors can be costly in the long run. In Chinese medicine, for instance, the philosophy is that medicine play only a third of the whole equation in getting patients to recover from whatever ailments they may be suffering from. The remaining two-thirds need to come from the initiatives of the patients themselves, such as strictly observing their diet, doing regular exercises, staying stress free, etc.

A key benefit of joining an ADHD support group when one have kids with ADHD is that it provides a good platform to interact and exchange information and ideas with people who are going through a similar situation. It is well documented that managing and coping with ADHD kids is no joke, and it can drive many a parents up the wall most of the time. But by being members of ADHD support groups, a great burden can be lifted from one's shoulders by sharing the problems during the group's get-togethers and exchanging of tips and strategies.

Often times, a single advice can make all the time you spent in the support group worthwhile. For example, a simple advice such as "Don't try and change all factors at once. Take it one step at a time" may just be the missing puzzle you are looking for. For those who are ready for the job market, for instance, support group members can often offer ideas on the best type of jobs to be in. For example, they may tell you that ADHD friendly jobs are those which are fast paced in nature, autonomous, fosters creativity, bite-size projects, and those with clearly defined expectations. Jobs which meet this criterias include creative arts, media, sales, hair styling, coaching, inventing, and writing.

Generally, people who joined such groups basically only have one thing in mind - which is to treat their children with ADHD in the most wholesome manner possible.

Their sincerity and willingness to share experiences and advice should therefore never be doubted. But of course, there are cases of poorly managed support groups, but that is basically a management issue. If one bumps into a lousy support group, it should not be a reason to end all links with ADHD support groups. Think long term and just search for a better one in the neighbourhood.

What if ADHD support groups do not exist in your area? Well, there are two options available. The first one is to look for an online version of it. These people often get together via webinars, forums, and message boards. The second option is to start one in your area. Starting one is not as diffcult as it sounds. Basically what one needs to do is locate a well established one out of town, pay them a visit, and request their guidance on how to establish one. Most of them are ever willing to lend a helping hand.

It should be clear by now that there are many benefits in joining ADHD support groups. If you happen to have an ADHD child, may be it's time to consider joining such a group in your city for the benefit of your child and family. There is no need to suffer alone. Just reach out, and you will be surprised by the number of helping hands that come your way.

People affected by Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) don't usually even know that something is wrong. Their demeanor is often times pessimistic, always preparing for the worst and never expecting anything better.

There are 6 different types of anxiety disorders, and they are Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorder (PD), Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), Post Traumatic Anxiety Disorder (PTAD), Obsessive Anxiety Disorder (OAD), and Phobia Related Anxiety Disorder (PRAD). All of which are highly treatable, and some of which are even curable.

When suffering from an anxiety disorder it is important to seek therapy, or treatment. There are two forms of therapy that would most likely be used in correcting, or curing such disorders.

First is cognitive therapy, this is a treatment more focused on ones mental state, uncovering the roots of the disorder and attempting to change the way one views certain situations or emotions.

Second is behavioral therapy, this type of treatment could be considered a type of confrontational therapy. This is where one would confront their fears over and over until becoming desensitized, or no longer afraid.

The one thing to remember is that anxiety disorders, although to some may seem trite, are real disorders and are cause for real concern. Every parent wants their child to be a healthy, happy one. Ok, maybe not every parent, but certainly every concerned parent does. So, how do you know if your child actually has a mental illness and what do you do about it?

Keep in mind that you don't have to follow a trend. Just because someone tells you that your child may have a mental illness doesn't mean they are right. It has become very "popular" to diagnose children with mental illnesses. In my personal experience, I have met children who were diagnosed and had no actual condition. They were simply being children. So, don't go with just one opinion.

A mental illness is a problem in the thought process. In other words, the thought process has become so severely hampered that the person can no longer make reasonable judgments and the condition has affected situations of every day life. Children however are just now learning how to make good decisions and quite few of their behaviors are based on actions that they themselves see. In other words, if you are yelling and throwing things when angry, don't let someone tell you that your child is mentally ill when they throw tantrums and have angry behavior problems. You simply need to change your own behavior and give them a different pattern to learn from.

Chances are, you know your child better than anyone. Trust your instincts. Keep your healthcare provider informed. If they don't want to be informed then find a new one because they cannot make an educated decision without all the information.

For example, I took my child to our assigned doctor for excessive headaches which included nausea and an increased sensitivity to light and sound. Now, I never went to medical school but I was pretty sure those were migraines. Mix in the fact that every male in my family has migraines and it seems pretty simple to me. But, my doctor refused to hear any family history, saying he didn't need to hear it. Well, I was offended because some of my family members who have migraines have also died of anuerisms. Calm me silly, but I thought some family history may be important.

Remember, you are paying the physician. If you are not satisfied with their quality of work, then get a new one. You wouldn't keep a plumber who worked on the sink while you were trying to explain that the toilet leaked would you?
